Diving in Deeper. Into Photography.
It’s a little over two years now since I first started uploading images to Dreamstime.com in hopes of making a few cents. Looking at how things have developed, it turned out I’ve made the better choice by sticking with that as a hobby. I’ve already made far more than I’d expected and the earnings keep increasing with each new month. In 2008 each month has been better than the previous, which is a rather pleasant trend. I can’t complain.
So, in view of the fact that in less than a year we’ll be moving out of our safe temporary habitation to a more independent and demanding life in Sofia I had to give some additional thought to my photo experience. Do I continue on a below-average level and make a few dollars, or do I take a step of faith and continue at a different level? Although exciting, it wasn’t an easy choice to make yet another investment and start working on improving my skills.
About a week ago I bought the semi-pro Canon EOS 5D camera, which offers me quite a few improvements in comparison to the old 20D I still have and will surely continue using. Apart from the fact that I’ll have to work hard for at least 6 months to pay it off, I’m quite inspired by that camera - since I have it I’ve produced well over 100 images, which is an accomplishment for that short period (for me at least).
At the moment, the plan is to work hard on photography before we move to Sofia in September next year. If I manage to build a higher quality portfolio which will bring a steady and more significant income, then I’ll be able to slightly reduce the amount of my work and focus either on more church work and/or art photography (the latter a field I’m eager to explore, but don’t have the time for now).
Bottom line, the goal is that I in the next one year I grow to become a semi-professional stock photographer. There’s quite a few things which I need to seriously work in regards to my technique and style, but I’m positive. I see a bright future with photography - it’s a very relaxing hobby, but when taken seriously it can also be an income generator (and a serious one at that). So, if you need portraits or other shots taken and you’re willing to have me practice on you (for free :P), don’t hesitate to drop me a note.
Many of you have been a great support in various way along my photography journey. Thank you for that! I really appreciate it. As always - I’m open to comments and suggestions in regards to this new “venture”.
